The South China Tigers is China and the Greater Bay Area’s first professional rugby club, taking part in an innovative new global rugby competition, Global Rapid Rugby.
Global Rapid Rugby is an innovative new World Rugby sanctioned rugby competition with a focus on Asia Pacific. An initial six teams will take part in the 2019 Showcase Series, including the debut participation of the South China Tigers.
Other teams in 2019 are drawn from Asia Pacific including Australia’s Western Force and teams from Singapore, Malaysia, Fiji and Samoa.
GRR features several exciting new rules and innovations that emphasise open, attacking rugby and are helping to introduce new audiences to the game.
2019 will give teams time to showcase what Global Rapid Rugby is all about. It is a great way to prepare and familiarise teams with some of the competition rules, shorter halves, scoring variations etc.
2020 will be the first official full season of GRR with plans to have 8 teams competing across 14 rounds (56 games) and four finals.
The competition will intensify next season so this year’s Showcase Series is a perfect way for us to gradually prepare for what is ahead.
While many Tigers players are drawn from the ranks of the Hong Kong and China national rugby teams, the South China Tigers are a fully professional rugby club that takes part in the innovative new rugby competition, Global Rapid Rugby.
SCT are not involved in any national level competition.
Our home games for the Showcase Series will be played at Aberdeen Sports Ground.
